Sherburne Wildlife - Birds, Animals, and Wildflowers in the Sherburne National

Sherburne Wildlife Introduction

Muskrat and Grebe

We moved to the Sherburne Area in May 2008. Dave and I soon found our way to the Wildlife Drive on County Road 5. The beautiful seven-mile drive became our weekly and sometimes 2-3 times per week "date night" activity. It met our criteria - close to home and very inexpensive!

After the first year, we decided to volunteer - we were there anyway, so why not be useful at the same time. We met Nancy Haugen, the Visitors Coordinator, a very sweet woman who has since retired. She gave us the initial training and informed us that we would need to be able to identify 25 different birds before we would be official "Roving Wildlife Interpreters."

I wasn't too worried, but Dave didn't know how he would get past recognizing 5 birds, let alone 25. Recognizing several birds was a lot easier than we thought. Even today we still have a tough time sorting out the LBJ's - Little Brown Jobbies as Barb Krull likes to call them. Wrens, sparrows, and warblers - oh my!

We hope our site will help you learn to recognize "the birds and the bees, and the flowers and the trees" as you venture into the great outdoors!

What Do We Consider Wildlife?

I'm sure there are many schools of thought on what might or might not qualify as "wildlife" but around here we are pretty flexible. If it's moving and outdoors, it's probably wildlife.

Moving includes the effects from the wind, so even clouds, rainbows and sunsets are acceptable!

Okay, so maybe Nature would have been a better word than Wildlife, but they don't call it the Sherburne National Nature Refuge!

This includes:

  • Birds
  • Mammals
  • Insects
  • Reptiles
  • Trees
  • Shrubs
  • Wildflowers
  • Weather
  • Clouds
  • Rainbows
  • Sunsets
  • Landscapes
  • Anything else that might make a beautiful picture and be interesting to learn more about - just ask.
